The Bolivian wine ban

It’s a pretty good idea to know the law. At least it is if you don’t want to land up getting fined or end up behind bars. So the idea is simple; learn the law, live by the law and avoid making those in positions of authority angry. Whether the law relates to playing at an online casino, driving on the right side of the road or not chaining an alligator to a fire hydrant (we’re looking at you, Michigan) it’s there for a reason.

On the other hand, what if the law is so silly, so strange and makes so little sense that following it seems to defy all logic? Impossible, you say? All laws are made in shrewd, well thought out processes and would never be made official if they were completely illogical.

Well prepare to have your mind blown as we take a look at some of the strangest, most nonsensical laws that actually exist. Here are some of the weirdest and wackiest real, official laws from around the world.

Drinking While Married – Bolivia

Someone, at some point, decided that a married woman shouldn’t be allowed to have more than one glass of wine in La Paz, Bolivia. Trying to understand the reasoning behind this may well just make your head spin.

Is it because a married woman that is more than a little drunk is more prone to fight with her husband? Or perhaps because a drunk married woman is more likely to be promiscuous and have an affair? You would think, if anything, that a married woman should be allowed more wine than an unattached woman. But clearly not…

No Strapless Gowns For Men – Australia

In Melbourne, Australia, it is okay for men to wear high heels, midriff exposing tops and even fishnet stockings in public. Strapless gowns, on the other hand, are where the line is drawn. Again, trying to figure out how this specific law came into existence will likely make your head spin.

It can only be imagined that perhaps a government official was being relentlessly taunted by a guy who had very unattractive shoulders, and a law was slapped down to stop the maliciousness. It makes about as much sense as any other theory.

Keep a Leash On It – Canada

Canada has some very strange laws that relate mostly to animals, and it seems like it’s a Provincial thing, as there are many that crop up when taking a closer look. In Vancouver it’s illegal to kill a Sasquatch (first you have to find one) and in Oak Bay you could be fined as much as $100 if your parrot talks too loudly. That’s not all, in Port Coquitlam you may not own more than 4 rats at a time, and in Victoria, street entertainers are forbidden to give kids balloon animals. Seems like someone has it in for noisy pets – real or balloon!

Don’t Tease The Animals – Oklahoma

The best for last; it is illegal in Oklahoma to pull a funny face at a dog. Perhaps there was a serious problem with unacceptable dog taunting, resulting in mad barking at early hours of the morning. But then, who was going around at 5AM pulling faces at dogs, making them bark? Also, why just pulling funny faces at dogs? Why not a law against taunting dogs in general? Is it okay to tease dogs otherwise, sending them into a barking frenzy? Was it just a serious problem with dogs getting low self-esteem, due to being taunted with funny faces?
