When deciding on accommodation for a holiday, most will simply go with what is affordable, but also still offers desired luxuries. This is a smart approach, of course, since saving on accommodation means more money to spend on entertainment, sightseeing, exotic cuisine and mementos. But what if the hotel stayed at was so unique, so interesting, or perhaps even so bizarre that it became part of the holiday experience?

It turns out that there are multiple quirky and interesting hotels around the world. From those that transport you to a new world, to those that are located in extremely unusual locations, these are some of the most bizarre accommodation options found globally.

You may not believe it, but there is a hotel entirely underwater in the Emerald Lagoon, located in Florida. The location was once a research laboratory but has since been converted into a hotel. It has limited luxuries, offering only a fridge, microwave and showers, but the fact that this hotel is basically a reverse fishbowl pretty much speaks for itself.

Those staying will have to dive in order to reach it, but this is to be expected when you’re dealing with a fully submerged structure. A truly remarkable experience, and one that is perhaps less well known than it should be.

Das Park Hotel

This is what happens when true innovation shines. The Das Park Hotel is, literally, the experience of sleeping in a concrete drainpipe. It may seem outrageous at first, but some effort has been extended to make the two-meter pipe liveable, with a lamp, blanket, sleeping bag, and door.

The benefits are that the area is right beside the River Danube, providing an extremely pleasant outdoor experience. Plus, you will be paying so little, so why not give it a shot? You can then save your online slots winnings for other exciting experiences, rather than forking out a fortune for getting some sleep.

A truly remarkable innovation, the Hotel Kakslauttanen is located in Finland, within the Arctic Circle. This means, naturally, that dealing with the cold is a real problem. But when doing so from within a glass igloo, with the best possible view of the northern lights, the whole experience takes on a new level of appeal. Word is that the glass igloos hold heat well, but getting to them, and back again, will still require some serious heavy clothing.

Why sleep in a hotel, when you could be sleeping in a nine-meter high dog shaped hotel? Sounds silly at first, until you learn that you will be sharing your space with a total of 26 bizarre dog carvings. Now it sounds even sillier. This quirky hotel, located in Idaho, is strange for no other reason than being strange. Still, its appealing, if you’re into strangeness.

Now getting into the truly bizarre territory, the Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort, located in Italy, is constructed entirely around 9,000 year old cave dwellings. The area is well known for its sassi, otherwise known as homes carved directly into rock surfaces, which are straight from prehistoric times. You can now stay in these rock carved homes, and enjoy four-star luxury while you’re at it.

The Adrere Amellal is last on the list, and by far the most outrageous. Offering no electricity, the nearest location an 8-hour drive away, and sitting smack bang in the middle of the Sahara Desert, you have to be a certain kind of crazy to stay here. Apparently it’s very calm and relaxing, which is no doubt true, given that it is literally in the middle of nowhere!
