Lucky Nugget Casino always stay up-to-date on the latest gaming developments. New video game systems are always a big deal – and the Nintendo Switch is the most recently-announced console. We decided to take a closer look at it, to see what impact it could have on the future of gaming.

Switch it up

The core selling point of the Switch is that it’s a home console which is also portable. You can put it into a charging dock connected to a screen, delivering the classic home-gaming systems we’re familiar with – but you can also take it around as a handheld gaming device. There’s also a small stand on the back of it, allowing you to prop it up as a portable screen wherever you go.

The Switch initially looks like a tablet computer, but with a solid bar on either side boasting the controls – two thumbsticks and two sets of buttons. On the left side, these take the role of a classic d-pad. On the right side, they are the standard controller buttons that we all know and love. These sides can be disconnected and used one in each hand, or turned sideways and given one each to two people. They’re known as “Joy-Cons,” a mixture of ‘joy’ and ‘controller’. It means that multiplayer mode is built into the system: you don’t need to buy an extra controller to play with a friend.

When you’ve got the console plugged into your television, the two sides attach to a more standard handheld controller, letting you play games in a more typical home-gaming style.

It’s currently boasting a retail price of NZ $549/CA $399, and is due to be released around the world on March 3, 2017.

The games forecast

Versatility is the name of the game with the Switch, but that’s not all it has going for it. A number of different developers have confirmed their involvement with it too, such as Activision, Bethesda, Ubisoft and EA. These are studios behind successful franchises that don’t usually come to Nintendo consoles. It hints that the Switch is powerful enough to run Xbox One or PlayStation 4 games, so more varied titles may be released on it.

However, currently everyone rushing to buy the Switch will probably be after the big-name, Nintendo exclusive franchises. There’s a new Super Mario game slated for release this year and the latest Legend of Zelda game, Breath of the Wild – which has been teased since the 2013 E3 gaming conference – is going to be available upon the Switch’s release.

A recent Nintendo Direct presentation also announced lots of Fire Emblem titles for the Switch. While not as well-known as Zelda or Mario, Fire Emblem has become one of Nintendo’s most bankable franchises in recent years. It’s focused around turn-based tactics in a high fantasy setting and it’ll probably help sell some extra units in anticipation.

The future of gaming?

It’ll be interesting to see if the Nintendo Switch has any further impact on the shape of gaming. The classic home console is a well-trodden formula by now: Sony and Microsoft have mastered it. But just as the Wii’s release created a wave of copy-cat motion sensing technology which never did quite as well, the Switch could pave the way for more flexible gaming tech.

Right now, it’s too early to know whether the Switch will be successful or not. There’s going to be a lot of factors at play determining how well it performs. Will there be enough battery life? Will it find its niche in the market? Will it replace the handheld 3DS console?

There’s also some uncertainty about Nintendo recently. The 3DS sold well and continued to dominate the handheld gaming market with titles like Pokemon. But will the Nintendo Switch see the same fate as its predecessor, the unsuccessful Wii U? Or will it manage to prove its worth?

It’s always exciting when new game consoles are announced as we can watch how the tech landscape changes.
