Final Fantasy XV has sold six million copies worldwide since its launch in November, and there’s more downloadable content expected for it soon. How does the game compare to some other top-selling games, though? Lucky Nugget Casino take a look at the top 10 best-selling games of all time – even though none of them are casino software.

10. Diablo III (30 million)

Released in 2012, Diablo came out across PC, PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. It had the advantage of spanning across different console generations, so people without the latest machine could also play it. It set the record for the fastest-selling PC game at its launch, shifting 3.5 million units within 24 hours. It received an all-round positive reception from critics for being intuitive, unpredictable, and immersive.

9. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (30 million)

There are jokes that Bethesda Studios no longer make games, instead, they just make Skyrim re-releases. The Legendary Edition was released in 2013, and the Special Edition came out in 2016. But, since the game was released in 2011, it’s been called one of the best video games of all time. It may sell even more units soon, as there is a planned port to the new Nintendo Switch coming out in 2017.

8. New Super Mario Bros. (30.8 million)

Mario has to be one of the most recognizable video game characters of all time. New Super Mario Bros. came out in 2006 as a Nintendo DS exclusive, and still managed to sell more than 30 million units. It’s a side-scrolling action platform with both single- and multiplayer functions. Kids loved the bright colours and intuitive gameplay, while adults loved the nostalgia trip: it was the first new Mario side-scrolling game since 1992.

7. Wii Sports Resort (32.8 million)

Wii Sports Resort was released as a standalone title in 2009, but it also started to be packaged with new Wiis too. The game itself came with the Wii MotionPlus accessory, which made it popular. It was full of minigames, which were fun to pick up and easy to play. It also didn’t take itself too seriously!

6. Mario Kart Wii (36.4 million)

The second biggest-selling Wii game of all time, Mario Kart Wii came out in 2008. It incorporated many levels and characters from previous games, and as a result many people loved it. The game received plenty of positive reviews at launch. It sold more than a million copies in its first week on sale in Japan, and it’s the best-selling race game ever.

5. Super Mario Bros. (40.2 million)

Super Mario’s very first installment came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985. It helped to revive the Western gaming market, which had crashed in the mid-80s. It came in a bundle with the original NES system, which can help explain its popularity. Despite being an old game, it’s a good one.

4. Grand Theft Auto V (70 million)

This is the biggest selling AAA title in history, so far. When it launched in 2013, copies cost USD $60 and its equivalent in other regions.  For a while this game seemed inescapable – everyone and their grandmother had a copy! A big part of the sales can be attributed to copies sold for the Xbox 360. Despite nearing the end of its lifespan, 17.8 million copies were sold for the 360.

3. Wii Sports (82.8 million)

What do you do if you want to play tennis, golf or baseball but can’t be bothered to go outside? Wii Sports was a revolutionary game that showed off the Wii’s motion controls to their full extent. This game came bundled in with the Wii console, so almost everyone has a copy – there’s around 102 million Wiis in the world.

2. Minecraft (108 million)

Minecraft has become an incredibly successful game. People can get millions of views on gameplay videos on YouTube, and people love showing off their creations. Minecraft is a sandbox and survival game, but it’s become very popular with adults and kids alike. The game was first released in 2011, but it’s also come out on almost every console there is. And if we check out these figures again in 2018, Minecraft will almost certainly have sold even more.

1. Tetris (495 million)

Tetris on the Game Boy sold 35 million copies by itself, and it stands as the most popular game of all time. It’s sold nearly 500 million copies in total across mobile, PSP, PlayStation 3, NES and Game Boy releases. Versions were even available for BlackBerry and Windows Phone operating systems. No matter how great you think other games are, none will ever come close to Tetris’s record.

While six million copies is a great start, Final Fantasy needs to sell five times as many copies if it wants to get into the record books. If you’re more a fan of casual slot gaming than epic adventures though, Lucky Nugget is right here to fill your niche.
