He might well be the next Republican nominee with experience in big business, but Donald Trump has been making waves this month after refusing to pay 200 Taj Mahal subcontractors. Lucky Nugget take a look at why this is the case!
Trump fails to pay hundreds of hard workers
Although known for his scathing speeches and pro-worker rhetoric, Donald Trump has forgotten to taste his own medicine.
Trump, throughout his presidency campaign, has built up a reputation as a protector of workers and jobs. Unfortunately, he’s been accused of of failing to pay hundreds of people — from lawyers to carpenters — for their services.
It’s been reported that over 3,500 lawsuits have been filed against the business magnate over the last thirty years, with the majority of issues arising from American workers claiming that Trump, or his companies, have point-blank refused payment.
Some of the filings against Trump, documented by New Jersey Casino Control Commission in the entirety, came from 253 project sub-contractors of the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City. They all accuse Trump of refusing to pay them in full, on time, for all their work. In total, it is believed that Trump’s companies owe a total of $69.5 million to contractors.
More than 200 Mechanic’s liens have argued that they were underpaid by Trump, with claims reaching $75K by Plainview, New York. Another claim has come to light also, with a New York City real estate banking firm fighting for $1 million.
State regulators have also found that Trump Mortgages and Trump Plaza violated more than 24 provisions of the Fair Labor Act to pay overtime, or even minimum wage.
Trump has settled though, with Trump Miami Resort Management LLC settled with 48 contractors. The average settlement came in at $800 for each worked, and a whopping $3000 for one worked, according to court records.
The defence argue that the work completed wasn’t good enough and the workers themselves did not fulfil their jobs. “Let’s say that they do a job that’s not good, or a job that they didn’t finish, or a job that was way late. I’ll deduct from their contract, absolutely,” Trump said, according to the USA Today report. “That’s what the country should be doing.”
So, there you have it — do your job properly or you’ll not get paid (well, if you work for Donald Trump, anyway)!
