The search is on to find a New Zealand lad to play the part of Benji in the smash hit, international festival Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The hunt begins now, with auditions to take place between the 19th – 21st of August. Lucky Nugget takes a look at this story in more detail.
Benji, if you’re not already familiar, is the son of lead character Tick. His son is the real reason why Tick tries to convince Bernadette and Felicia to head off into the desert, in, yes, a big pink bus for four weeks to stay at the Hotel Casino Resort in Alice Springs.
Tick is hesitant at first because he hasn’t seen his son for years and is, as you would expect, cautious about introducing him to his somewhat colourful lifestyle. Fortunately, Marion — the boy’s mother — raised him to be open-minded.
From there Priscilla Queen of the Desert is a laugh-a-minute family friendly show, ideal for the summer holidays.
There’s three spots up for grabs in total, with the show’s directors planning on using three actors to alternate the role. Ideally, they should be experienced in acting and should possess a good singing voice. Good dance moves are also a must — although, not crucial to landing the role.
It’s also beneficial for them to have at least some experience in musical theatre. Great news is that all ethnic backgrounds will be considered, along with all heights.
If selected, you’ll child will need to be available from the 10th to the 14th for a five day rehearsal, and then from the 14th to mid-November for the Auckland season. Applications close midnight August 11th at the Auckland City Theatre Academy Studios, 251 Hinemoa street, Birkenhead, from the 19th to the 21st of August.
If you think your child could be the next big star then get them down! Honestly, you don’t get many opportunities like this in life, so seize the day and get straight on to it. Good luck!
