Plans are being finalised to bring an $85m hotel next to a Christchurch casino with the hope of attracting players to the city. To be built on the corner of Peterborough and Durham street, it will have more than 200 rooms available.
Improving New Zealand’s oldest casino
Christchurch casino was the first in the country to be built way back in 1994, but has suffered over recent years due to the terrible earthquakes that have struck the region. Hoping to renovate the area and give a fresh lease of life, the hotel will be accompanied by eateries, bars, shops and of course, the casino.
As for the hotel, it is four and a half stars with 10 floors and 434 parking spaces. The Peterborough joins the latest in a host of hotels that being built in the city. Funding for the project has been secured and construction should begin early next year, with the intended completion date being 2019.
A competitive market…
Given the already tight casino and iGaming market, casinos need something fresh to offer to ensure they remain attractive to regular players. As such, the improvements have been deemed necessary by CEO Brett Anderson: “We’re in a competitive market against other casinos here and in Australia”.
The Peterborough will provide people the chance to visit the city and stay just a stones throw away from the casino. A total of 724,000 people visited over last year and although Anderson has no immediate plans to increase the gambling facilities, he didn’t rule it out if they see a long term rise in visitors.
Enjoying the excellent range of games at your fingertips is extremely practical with Lucky Nugget, but visiting the casino is always a great experience. When the Christchurch casino is up and running with its new hotel, it’ll be one worth checking out.
