Imagine, if you will, a member of the CIA knocking on your door, handing over an arrest warrant and informing you that you are being detained. But why, you ask flabbergasted. Impossible, you declare, a bead of sweat trailing the length of your cranium. Or at least, you have no proof of that, Mr CIA operative. On the contrary, you’re told, the psychic division saw you do it, clear as day.
Silliness, of course, we can all share a little laugh at this impossible scenario. Or will your laughter come to an abrupt halt when I tell you that for four decades the CIA and Department of defence did research into the psychic phenomenon? This is true, it is not a joke.
The Men Who Stare At Goats
The film staring George Clooney, titled the Men Who Stare At Goats, is an adaptation of a book by the same name. It chronicles the real life investigations conducted by the United States military into individuals with rumoured psychic powers. Specifically, remote viewing and extrasensory perception. Yes, there were also attempts by gifted individuals to stop the hearts of living creatures, via sheer force of thought. Hence the staring at goats business. Again, this is not a joke. The research, once again, went on for four decades.
Thankfully you and me, being folks of sound mind, merely throw up our eyebrows and sneer at such silliness. We know that there is absolutely no reason to take such hogwash seriously. Unless, of course, there was an all but overwhelming amount of evidence to the contrary that such things were even remotely real…

Nazi Black Magic
In 1945 an operation called Alsos saw the United States going on an intelligence-gathering mission, following the defeat of Nazi Germany. A veritable treasure trove of information was uncovered, relating to projects run by Heinrich Himmler. It turns out that multiple fully funded missions were carried out, including on psychokinesis and extrasensory perception. Teams were also sent out to locate items such as the Holy Grail, and the Lance of Destiny. Once again, not a joke.
Russian Black Magic
It was during the 1950s that the United States started looking into countermeasures for Soviet mind control techniques. Based on information recovered from the above-mentioned Nazi intelligence, and reports that the Soviets were conducting similar research, it was thought that preventative research be done to avoid attack via psychic means.
Results Were Seen
This research extended into the 1970s and 80s, culminating in the information on which the Men Who Stare at Goats is based on. During that research, some remote viewing attempts saw results, though how much of it was actually psychic in nature is debatable. Either way; results. Today research of this type is still in operation, a $3.9 million project, based around the concept of precognition. The researchers involved refer to the phenomenon as “spidey sense”!
